The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Berlin together with the Sri Lanka community and friends of Sri Lanka celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in a truly festive atmosphere on Saturday, 29th April 2017 at the Embassy premises.
Celebrations commenced with Karunatilaka Amunugama, which was then followed by singing of the National Anthem, lighting of the traditional oil lamp and religious observations.
The Festival provided an immense opportunity for both Sri Lankan and German participants to experience and enjoy traditional Sri Lankan customs and rituals including ‘hisa thel gāma’ and worshiping the elders. The participants also took part enthusiastically in the traditional new year games and festivities, which included placing the eye on the elephant, lime & spoon race, bun eating, tug o’ war, fancy dress parade and ‘avurudu kumariya’ contest and many more other fun filled activities.
Speaking at the occasion, Ambassador Amunugama wished everyone present a happy and a prosperous New Year and mentioned the significance of the celebrations, which is renewing family bonds and friendships. Ambassador also thanked members of the community and well-wishers for being present throughout the festival and for their active support and contribution to promote Sri Lanka’s unique traditions and customs abroad.
All the guests, community members and well -wishers were treated to a sumptuous traditional New Year ‘Kevili’ table in the morning, which was then followed by lunch specially prepared for the occasion.
