Media Release - Open German Carom Championship on 24th & 25th November 2012 in Berlin

Carrom1On 24th and 25th November 2012, the Open German Carrom Championship was held in Berlin. The event was organized by the German Carrom Federation. The Singles Championship was held on 24th and the Doubles Championship on 25th November.

Carrom2H.E. Ambassador Sarrath Kongahage was the Guest of Honour of the event. In his speech at the inauguration of the Carrom Championship, H.E the Ambassador mentioned that in the final of the sixth World Carrom Championship Sri Lanka's Nishanta Fernando won the Men's Single by beating the reigning Indian players, which is a remarkable achievement, because India has been winning the Men's Single continuously since the inauguration of Carrom World Championships. H.E. the Ambassador further suggested a visit of the Sri Lankan national team with Nishanta Fernando to Germany in order to foster the growing interest in Carrom in Germany.

Carrom3Mr. Joerg Kijanski, President of the German Carrom Federation, mentioned that there is a growing interest in Carrom throughout Germany, and German Carrom players take a very active role in international tournaments. He further stated that the German Carom Federation would welcome the Sri Lankan team to Germany.

Mr. Jagath Wickramasinghe, staff Member of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Germany, was one of the 38 players participating in the Singles and Doubles Championships. In the single event, Tobias Krueger from Dortmund won the first place. He also paired together with his greatest rival from the singles event, Joerg Johannes from Cologne, to win the doubles event.Carrom4
