Registration of Births
The birth in Germany of a child, whose parents or one of the parents is a Sri Lankan citizen at the time the of the child’s birth can be registered at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Germany under Section 5(2) of the Citizenship Act of Sri Lanka.
Generally, a birth of a child born to Sri Lankan national/s should be registered at the Embassy of Sri Lanka within three (3) months. If the birth is registered after three (3) months but less than one (1) year, such births can also be registered by the Embassy upon submission of the reasons for the delay for the registration by the applicant/parents. However, if an application is made to register the birth of a child after one year of the birth, the Embassy should obtain the approval of the Registrar General’s Department, Battaramulla. In this case, the application is sent to the Registrar General’s Department for approval and hence it takes more time to issue a Birth Certificate of a child born more than a year ago.
Please note that it is mandatory that the applicants (parents) should visit the Embassy in person in order to register a birth of a child born in Germany. Please visit the official web site of the Embassy in order to book an appointment online before visiting the Embassy in person.
