Celebration of the 78th National Independence Day of Sri Lanka in Germany.

he Embassy of Sri Lanka in Berlin commemorated the 78th National Independence Day of Sri Lanka on 4 February 2026 at the Embassy premises with the participation of members of the Sri Lankan community residing in Germany.

The proceedings began with the ceremonial hoisting of the National Flag and the rendition of the National Anthem. Multi-faith religious observances were conducted by clergy representing the Buddhist, Hindu, Christian/Catholic, and Islamic faiths, symbolizing Sri Lanka’s longstanding tradition of religious harmony and cultural pluralism. A two-minute silence was observed in remembrance of national heroes and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s independence and sovereignty. Messages from His Excellency Anura Kumara Dissanayake, President of Sri Lanka; Hon. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Prime Minister; and Hon. Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, were read during the ceremony.

In her address, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Germany H.E. Varuni Muthukumarana reflected on the significance of the 78th Independence anniversary, honouring the vision and sacrifices of previous generations. She highlighted the strength found in Sri Lanka’s diversity and the collective resolve of its people in rebuilding the nation in the aftermath of the Ditwah cyclone. Referring to the continued deepening of Sri Lanka–Germany relations, the Ambassador highlighted the significance of the official visit of His Excellency Anura Kumara Dissanayake to Germany in 2025.

The event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem in Tamil, followed by the serving of traditional Sri Lankan refreshments.
